Urban Permaculture for Landscapes
For centuries, gardening trends have emphasized short lawns, trimmed hedges, and small feature trees. This focuses on minimalist aesthetics, demands constant maintenance, and champions uniformity as the standard for 'taking care of the land'.
At Patchwork Ecosystem, we offer a different perspective:
True landscape value comes from biodiversity and soil health, not uniform lawns, and native plants are better suited to support local ecosystem health.
Landscapes hold the power to keep us cool in the summer, warmer in the winter, and safer from fires and floods when properly designed.
Native biodiversity, local food security, and climate resilience go hand in hand.
When we design our landscapes well, positive effects spread to our communities.
We invite you to transform your landscape into an integrated, sustainable patch of our broader ecosystem. Together, we can support regional biodiversity, lower maintenance, increase food security, and foster a deeper connection to the world around us.
"Working with Zack was amazing! His thorough research and deep understanding of local species helped us see our property in a new light. He explained the unique characteristics of our yard, from climate history and micro-climate to water flows and soils, then carefully considered our goals, budget, and lifestyle to create a design that balanced our needs with those of the natural environment. We now have a solid plan which supports our project for years to come, and are grateful for the care and attention he put into the work."

How We Work Together
The process happens in three steps:
2. Site Assessment
Once we understand your goals and lifestyle, we map the landscape and factor in sunlight, rainfall, wind, and other seasonal factors, guiding our design to work with both built structures and the surrounding environment in symbiotic relationship.
1. Introduction
We start with a quick call and a personal survey that helps us understand how you currently spend time in the landscape, and how you'd love to see it thrive in the future.
3. Design
The final design will vary whether you have the "Full" or "DIY" plans, and range from a simple zoning guide and a recommended planting palette to a full 'concept plan' (implemented by yourself or a professional team), maintenance guide, and details on the wildlife and ecosystems these choices will support.
Let's Explore the Possibilities.
Eco-friendly landscaping and permaculture design are grounded in practical concepts.
